Sony's Music Unlimited streaming service is being updated today to offer high-quality 320 kbps AAC music on all platforms, including Android. The service, which offers unlimited (go figure) music streaming for the monthly price of $9.99, is hoping to persuade users to try it over competing services like Spotify and Rdio. 320 kbps AAC is generally regarded as a high enough quality streaming that general users won't notice the difference between it and locally stored files, but also keeps data usage from streaming reasonably low.
You can download the Music Unlimited app from the Play Store link above, and there is currently a 14 day free trial available when you sign up. The higher quality audio may be enough to have more users trying this service going forward.

A clear glass storefront surrounded by a paneled faade. Rectangular recessed lighting units. Cantilevered shelves. Rectangular tables arranged in a line in the middle of the store parallel to the walls and extending from the storefront to the back of the store.
Yep, that's an Apple Store alright. And that's the wording that Apple included in their trademark application for the Apple Store design, inarguably as much of an icon for Apple as the patented designs of their products. The trademark was granted last week by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Apple filed the application back in 2010, but was twice rejected. In response, Apple filed a 122-page brief on how their design could be considered "inherently distinctive". This brief included customer surveys and photos of various Apple Stores, and apparently was enough to persuade the USPTO that the trademark application should be approved and appropriately registered.
We doubt Apple's going to be putting a little ? in the corner of each Apple Store, but this does give Apple some leeway to pursue a legal offense against retailers they consider to be infringing on their trademarked design. It's worth nothing that this isn't a design patent, for Apple to pursue claims against another retailer they'd have to prove that customers are likely to be confused by the other company's allegedly similar design.
If you're thinking that Microsoft's retail stores might be the target of Apple's pursuit of a trademark on their own, that very well might be. Microsoft's first retail store opened in October 2009 in Scottsdale, Arizona, followed a week later by another store in Mission Viejo, California. Apple's trademark application was submitted seven months later. To date, Microsoft has opened thirty retail stores in the United States and Canada.
The appearance of Microsoft Stores really is quite similar to that of Apple's, with a clear glass storefront surrounded by a paneled faade, recessed rectangular lighting units, and rectangular tables - though Microsoft's tables are arranged in lines the middle of the store parallel the the storefront and extending between the walls. Numerous fake Apple Stores have been found in China (where Apple does have an official retail presence that draws massive foot traffic), though Apple's trademark from the USPTO is only valid within the borders of the United States.
What exactly Apple intends to do with their shiny new store design trademark is unknown at this point. But given Apple's aggressiveness with taking the court option when defending their patent claims, we wouldn't be surprised to see more of USPTO Registration Number 4277914 in the future?

The long rumored jailbreak for iOS 6.1 may arrive as soon as this Sunday. The jailbreak which has been in testing for a while now has been working fine with each beta release of iOS 6.1. The team needed to wait for the official release of iOS 6.1 so it could be fully tested with the final version of the firmware. Well the good news is that after yesterday?s official release of iOS 6.1 all is working fine and we may even see the jailbreak released this Sunday.
MuscleNerd, who is part of the new jailbreak team which goes under the title of Evad3rs confirmed via Twitter that iOS 6.1 final version is safe and can be jailbroken by the same means as the other beta releases of the firmware. The even better news is that in a further tweet, MuscleNerd teased that the jailbreak may even arrive on Super Bowl Sunday.
@MikeBeas @evad3rs yep 6.1 is safe
Hey, did everyone know the Super Bowl is this Sunday? What will you be doing? /cc @evad3rs /evad3rs.com
This untethered jailbreak has been a long time coming but those of you that like to jailbreak your device should not have too much longer to wait now. A point to note however is that the Evd3rs team are advising those who want to jailbreak to avoid the OTA update method and instead connect your device to iTunes and do a full backup and update this way. Apparently doing an over the air update is more time consuming for the team to fully test and also provides different SHSH blobs.
For me, Sunday can?t come soon enough! The lines are blurring between a stock iPhone and a jailbroken one but the thought of getting back the extra functionality that BiteSMS and LockInfo provide is just too mouth-watering. Who else is looking forward to the iOS 6.1 jailbreak?

We're all waiting for someone to sell that fancy orb docking station for the Nexus 4. In the meantime, ingenuity never rests and this 3D printed dock would make an awesome substitute. It uses a standard USB cable for charging, and an NFC sticker to trigger the NFC Task Launcher app to drop it into dock mode.
If you have access to a 3D printer, be sure to give this one a good look. And if you make any extra ones, give me a yell so I can throw my money at you.

It looks like some of the hottest MWC action won't take place in the same country -- or even in the same week, for that matter. HTC has confirmed that it will be holding a press event in New York on the 19th of February, which is a few days before the majority of MWC companies hold their press conferences. At the time of this post, we believe this will be the company's new flagship phone (currently rumored to be called the M7). We've also received official confirmation that an event will be held in London as well. Regardless of where they're held, we'll be there to get you the info on the latest and greatest from HTC!

It appears that Dish wasn't the only one who wants the FCC to put the brakes on Softbank's merger with Sprint. Bloomberg reports that the US Justice Department has just requested that the FCC delay the deal as well. No word on why governmental lawyers are making the request, but we'll update this post as soon as more information is available.
Update: While the DOJ has recommended that the FCC delay its approval of the deal due to national security concerns, it turns out that Dish has decided not to stand against the merger, after all. So, Sprint and Softbank have exchanged a private sector problem for a governmental one. The DOJ's scrutiny certainly provides a significant hurdle for the deal to clear, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the two telcos can never be together. We'll have to wait and see whether Uncle Sam gives the merger its final stamp of approval.
