Real Estate Community RentJuice Gets $6.2 Million From Tim Draper And Highland Capital

RentJuice, an online community that allows real estate agents and brokers to view rental data in real time is announcing its Series B round of $6.2 million in funding today, led by Highland Capital and esteemed Draper Fisher Jurvetson founder Tim Draper. While not consumer facing, RentJuice is still useful to consumers as it can provide a broker with up to the minute data on whether a given property is available, thus preventing inaccuracies. It gives brokers "one-click syndication" or the ability to automaticallypost properties to consumer real estate sites like Craigslist, Trulia and Zillow.RentJuice also offers premium accounts where users can upgrade to features that automate administrative work like lead gen, advertising and paperwork.

How to share files on your Windows network

Homegroups make sharing files and folders easy on Windows 7, but Windows XP and Vista users have to do things a little differently. Fortunately, there are dead-simple ways to share files on both XP and Vista, too.

Microsoft offers a very detailed step-by-step guide for those of you looking for an exhaustive walkthrough, but here's the short version for Windows XP users:
  • click Start > Run, type control folders, and press enter
  • click the View tab, and scroll down to the bottom of the list box
  • place a check next to use simple file sharing and then click OK
  • open My Computer and browse to a folder you want to share
  • right-click the folder and choose sharing and security
  • click the warning text ("If you understand the security risks...") then click Just enable file sharing
  • check Share this folder on the network and give your share a name (it doesn't have to match the folder name)
  • if you want to allow others to edit, delete, and add new files, check the Allow box as well
  • click OK, and you're done!
Any system on your network should now have access to the shared folder on your XP system. Now, let's move on to Vista.

German researchers prototype 6mm thick pico projector

Pico projectors just keep shrinking, and a new prototype developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Engineering is helping said shrinking along pretty strikingly. The team has developed a prototype pico which is just 6mm thick, making it the world's slimmest ever. Better yet, the projected image is 10 times brighter than a pico projector of its size would have previously been -- had it existed. The new lens on the projector is so small that it could potentially be integrated into smart phones without boosting size or weight. The new prototype is made of 45 red, green or blue microlenses, each with a 200 x 200 pixel LCD, inspired by a microlens array called a fly's eye condenser. The resulting resolution is nearly, but not quite, WVGA with 11 lumens of brightness. The prototype will be shown off at Nano Tech 2011 in Tokyo.

The Googlers Behind Pubsubhubbub Are Back At It With Camlistore. Open Sync, Store, Share

You may recall that back in the summer of 2009, there was a lot of hubbub over a Google 20 percent project with a near impossible name: Pubsubhubbub. Creators Brad Fitzpatrick and Brett Slatkin actually unveiled it at our Realtime Stream CrunchUp back then. And it garnered a lot of buzz for a good reason: it aimed to speed up traditionally slow feeds of information to realtime. Well, now the two are back at it again (with a few other contributors) with a new project: Camlistore. First of all, aside from the fact that I keep typing "Camilstore", this name is a significant improvement over the last project. It's an acronym for "Content-Addressable Multi-Layer Indexed Storage". But more importantly, the project once again looks to be a very interesting one. Though the team is quick to note on its homepage that it's "not ready for users", the site has quite a bit of information about the general hopes for the project and how they imagine it working.

RealPlayer for Android gets an improved interface, landscape mode, and more

The RealPlayer app for Android has gotten a major update, and it's all because of user input! OK, so Real may be playing that angle up a bit in its official blog post, but it's clear from playing with the updated media app that it's taking suggestions and criticism seriously.

In addition to a generally improved and more polished interface, RealPlayer for Android has added a landscape "now playing" mode and playlist support (music only for now). There's also a new homescreen widget that allows you to skip forward or back, pause, and resume playback. Tapping the track information zips you back to the player. You can also now tap and hold a song, video, or image to delete it from your device.

Some features are still missing -- I'd like to be able to share what I'm listening to from the Now Playing view, for example. I'd also appreciate something happening when I tap the search button on my Incredible. With a large media collection on your device, built-in search in RealPlayer would be a major bonus. Real seems determined to deliver an app that will be worth using, so it's likely these features -- and any others suggested by the community -- will arrive in a future update.
