Grab the auto-updating Bing Dynamic theme for Windows 7, enjoy some pretty pictures

Originally launched back in August (yes, we missed it!), the Bing Dynamic theme pack is a quick and easy way to get the latest and greatest Bing photos pasted all over your Windows 7 desktop wallpaper.

Four new images were added to the rotation today, but I honestly have no idea how many images are actually part of the pack. Apparently two new images are added every week -- it uses an RSS feed to discover new images! -- and there's nothing better than turning your computer on to be randomly surprised by a new, beautiful landscape, right?

Nokia N8 shipments begin, usher in Symbian^3 era

Nokia's N8 is now shipping to those of you who pre-ordered. It may not be the device that'll make you leave your beloved BlackBerry, iPhone, or Android phone but Nokia's N8 with its significantly enhanced Symbian^3 OS is without a doubt the best you can do if you're one of the millions of Symbian users looking for a smartphone upgrade. Having said that, fans of cameraphones on any platform might be swayed by the N8's 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, xenon flash, extra large image sensor, and HDMI out. Nokia says that availability will vary by country and operator and should be everywhere within the coming weeks.

Update: Pictures of the N8 assembly and shipping operations added in the gallery below.

Sprint Epic 4G update coming tomorrow, should fix 3G upload issues

So, you aren't crazy after all. Feels good, right? After nearly a month of bickering from Epic 4G owners, a Sprint forum administrator has finally come forward with glowing news about this so-called 3G upload issue: a fix is coming, and soon. If you missed out on the story, users were finding that their 3G uploads were being capped at around 150kbps, and a ginormous thread over at the carrier's message board has grown as the problem has persisted. Just today, though, one dshoem01 has provided the following snippet:
"Good news - an update will be released tomorrow 9/30. It will be rolled out over a 4 day period so not everyone will get it on day 1. I will have the standard MR information (fixes included, rollout schedule, etc) available tomorrow morning and will post it in a new featured thread."
Note that this doesn't specifically say that the 3G caps will be fixed here, but why else post this newsflash in the very thread that surrounds the issue? Rest assured, our fingers are firmly crossed.

[Thanks, Bradley]

T-Mobile G2 now shipping to some pre-orderers

You can't grab one of these bad boys from your local store just yet -- you'll have to wait until early October for that -- but some current T-Mobile customers who'd pre-ordered the G2 (including our own Myriam Joire) are reporting that their devices have shipped. That means we'll probably see at least a few of these showing up in excited forum threads tomorrow, and a whole phalanx of 'em by week's end. Get those QWERTY thumbs oiled and warmed up, folks.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Exclusive: VW's Terminal Mode prototype with a Nokia N97 at the helm, we go hands-on

What if you could plug any smartphone into your car and control your GPS, music and apps with large, vehicular controls? That's the entire idea behind Nokia's Terminal Mode. We trekked over to Volkswagen's research laboratories in Palo Alto, California to test the first working prototype actually integrated into a car -- a VW Passat, to be precise -- and got to put some German pedal to the metal with Ovi Maps guiding our every move. What did we think? Not bad for a product that's nearly two years away. Find out why (and get a video tour!) right after after the break.

Visible III is a challenging, confusing platformer - Time-Waster

Visible III

Look at the screenshot. Do you see how, on the top part, there's a landmine to my right? I'm not very close to it, though, so I can still pick up a bit of speed and jump over it.

Now look at the bottom of the screenshot and see the reflection. I'm actually right on top of a landmine there and if I move even a couple of pixels over to the right, I'm done for.

This is the basic premise of Visible III. It's very, very easy to die. I constantly had to stop in place and look at both halves of the screen before attempting anything. It's not just the traps, either. Sometimes the walls are shaped differently on each of the two parts of the screen -- which makes the game part brain teaser and part platformer. Like most other platformers I enjoy, respawning is fast here and you don't lose a lot when you die. There are multiple checkpoints on each level, and you respawn at the last checkpoint whenever you die.

Reflection isn't everything here, though; there are lasers, which you avoid by becoming invisible (by holding down Shift). But you can't be invisible forever. There's a bar that rapidly runs out when you're invisible, so you need to be quick. The same goes for scaling walls and grabbing the ceiling. It's possible (and sometimes vital), but only for a short while.

Use the Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary to find out what things are called

Merriam Webster

Everyone knows what a mushroom looks like. But what do you call those fin-looking parts under the cap? You know, those thin, membrane-like things?

That's the type of question you can't really use a regular dictionary for. You might get lucky with Wikipedia, but in this particular case, you won't.

The Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary helps you answer questions like these. It's a large visual index of beautiful, detailed illustrations from fields such as plants and gardening, communications, sports and games, and lots more. Each illustration has a legend, and when you click the word, you also get a short definition. But what's important is that you now know the word, so you can look it up elsewhere.

As far as I know, there's no community-generated visual dictionary (like Wiktionary for regular words). This could be an awesome Wiki-style project, but for now, Merriam-Webster offers one of the best visual dictionaries online, and it's free.

(Oh, and I didn't tell you what that part of the mushroom is called. If you're curious, just click the image and find out for yourself!)

Better Boost Your Stats: Gild Turns Hunting For A Tech Job Into A Game

If you've ever gone job hunting online (and who hasn't these days?) you know just how incredibly inefficient the process can be. Job listings are littered across the web, making it difficult to filter for the ones that match your skillset. And then when you actually go about applying to a job, you have no idea how you stack up against the competition ? or even how many other people have applied. Gild is a new site launching today at TechCrunch Disrupt that wants to make the whole process more efficient for technology professionals.. and maybe even a bit more fun. Gild is social gaming meets career advancement, which sounds like a contradiction but looks like it might just work in practice. The initial process is pretty straightforward: sign up and set up a profile for yourself, listing off each of your skills and your past work history (the site can import your CV and LinkedIn data). And then the real fun begins.

Pixel Qi turns into ideal 10-inch companion display with wired and Wireless USB, 1.5W power needs

Pixel Qi has today announced it's taking the next step in its quest for global domination of sunlight-readable displays. Partnering up with German outfit Display Solution AG, the company is about to start selling its 10-inch, 1024 x 600 panels as standalone units, which you'll be able to hook up to your computer or smartphone via USB, either the wired or Wireless version. Power consumption maxes out a measly 1.5W with the LED backlight turned on, meaning that one USB tether will be sufficient to feed it both power and data. We don't know exactly how long we've waited for a secondary screen with this sort of flexibility, but it's sure been a while. Look for Display Solution to start selling these hotcakes next month.

Franklin Roadie modular music system needs a table to boom

We've seen speaker systems that use flat surfaces as a diaphragm before, but Franklin's Roadie might be the first modular to splash down in the new millennium. It's a three part system (if you want it to be), consisting of the EVS-2000, EVS-3000 and EVS-4000. In order of mention, you've got a base model that accepts sources via a 3.5mm input jack, a rechargeable battery with SD card slot, and a bonus tweeter / equalizer. It ain't much good in your hand, but slap it on a table (or any other flat surface, like a floor) and the tunes start to boom. Or become marginally more audible, anyway. The trio should go on sale soon for $99.99 as a bundle, while the 2000 and 3000 can be picked up by themselves for $49.99 / $79.99, respectively.
